Article: The Godly Man

The Godly Man

Nearly 2,500 years ago, the Greek philosopher Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." While his words were spoken in a very different time and context, they resonate with Christians today. For men striving to walk with God, examining one’s life through the lens of scripture is essential. It raises the question: What does it mean to be a godly man?

Characteristics of a Godly Man

In 1 Timothy 6:11–12, we find a clear call to action:

“But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”

Here, the Apostle Paul identifies six essential traits of a godly man:

  • Righteousness
  • Godliness
  • Faithfulness
  • Love
  • Steadfastness
  • Gentleness

Paul’s advice to Timothy emphasizes not only what to avoid—such as greed and divisive arguments—but also what to actively pursue. These characteristics reflect a life committed to following God and standing firm in faith.

Building on Biblical Wisdom

Paul’s instructions to Timothy are complemented by guidance in Titus 2:1–15. This passage expands on the traits of a godly man, offering wisdom for both older and younger men:

  • Older men are called to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, and sound in faith and love.
  • Younger men are urged to be models of good works, showing integrity, and using sound speech that cannot be condemned.

Taken together, these passages provide a detailed portrait of God’s vision for manhood: a man who is honorable, faithful, and deeply rooted in love for God and others.

Let’s explore five key traits of a godly man in greater depth:

1. A Godly Man is Honest

Proverbs 19:1 reminds us, “Better is a poor person who walks in his integrity than one who is crooked in speech and is a fool.”

Honesty is foundational to a godly life. Integrity requires consistency between words, deeds, and actions—an alignment with God’s principles. While it’s tempting to take shortcuts or tell “harmless” lies, walking with integrity means resisting those urges. A godly man values truth, even when it’s inconvenient or challenging.

2. A Godly Man is Responsible

Romans 14:12 states, “So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.”

Responsibility is about more than fulfilling obligations; it’s about leaving a lasting legacy of faith and service. A godly man understands that his actions matter—not just to those around him but to God. Whether in family, work, or ministry, taking responsibility reflects a steadfast and righteous character.

3. A Godly Man is Generous

2 Corinthians 9:6 declares, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.”

Generosity flows from a heart transformed by God’s grace. A godly man gives selflessly—whether through time, resources, or encouragement—trusting that God will provide in return. Generosity isn’t limited to material wealth; it extends to acts of kindness and compassion that reflect God’s love for all people.

4. A Godly Man is Patient

Exodus 14:14 offers this reassurance: “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Patience is one of the greatest tests of faith. When circumstances feel overwhelming, it’s tempting to act impulsively or take control. Yet scripture reminds us to trust God’s timing and remain steadfast. Like Job, a godly man endures trials with faith, knowing that God’s plans are ultimately for good.

5. A Godly Man is Humble

Philippians 2:3-4 teaches, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”

Humility is the cornerstone of Christ-like leadership. Jesus exemplified this when He washed His disciples’ feet, showing that true greatness comes through serving others. A godly man sets aside pride, seeking to uplift those around him without expecting recognition or praise.

Living as a godly man is a journey of growth and self-examination. It begins with prayer, deep study of God’s Word, and a commitment to embody the character of Christ. Each day presents new opportunities to develop traits like honesty, patience, and humility.
